Do you admire those professional drink performance artists behind the bar known as bartenders? Have you always dreamed of mixing the perfect cocktail? Now’s your chance to try your hand at the exciting field of bartending!

If you’re curious about bartending, it might be wise to ask a bartender a few questions on a day that the bar you’re at isn’t busy. If you’re wondering what it takes, here are a few qualities that make it easier to be a bartender:
  • Having a great personality; being a people person – Bartending is a very people-oriented job, you’re making drinks all night for people and also interacting with them. It helps to have a good personality and also could contribute to the amount of tips you get.
  • Be proficient in math – While the era of electronic registers makes this skill less neccesary, it is still a good skill to have in case you have to calculate totals on the fly like if a customer asks the price of a drink order that includes multiple drinks.
  • Having a good memory – The same rule applies to servers and waitstaff, you have to be able to remember which customers ordered what and get their drinks to them in a timely manner.
  • Be a team player – This is especially true if you’re working with other bartenders. Being able to be a contributing player on whatever barstaff team you become a part of is terribly essential.
  • Work well under pressure – When the bar is bumping, the pressure is on to get drinks to people in a timely manner, manage the money, start and close tabs, pour drinks, etc. It can get pretty overwhelming. You have to be able to be cool in tense situations.
  • Look your best – You don’t have to be the most attractive person in the world to be a bartender, but it helps to look your best. Not only will it instill you with more confidence, but it’ll make patrons and regulars want to be around you more and spend more time at the bar.
