Drinks made from concentrated powders have been around for a pretty long time now. Kool Aid has been around since the 1920’s, and everybody seems to love those little Crystal Light packets you can add to your water to make it taste like a variation of fruit.

This is all well and good, but imagine the same concept for beer. Concentrated beer? Your first reaction might be one of skepticism, as was that of this writer. However, there are advantages to powdered beer aside from the fact that astronauts could now potentially drink beer on the space station.

This concentrated beer is made by Pat’s Backcountry Beverages. Owner Pat Tatera was inspired to create the beer after being inconvenienced by the fact that bringing cold six packs of beer with him on a backpacking trip was logistically impossible, so much so that he and his companion went back to their car shortly after the hike began to drink the beer they’d left behind.

Eager to find a solution to the problem of a beerless trip, Tatera developed a beer syrup which, when combined with a carbonating agent in powdered form, water, and the use of a portable carbonating system that looks like a water bottle, is turned into a cold brew made from only the ingredients sanctioned by German purity laws: barley, water, hops and yeast.

While your local bar won’t replace its taps anytime soon, Tatera is marketing this beer to hikers and campers who can take advantage of the portability of concentrated beer to enjoy beer wherever they go. The company claims that it tastes just like a premium micro-brew, and is planning to add nut brown, American lager, and pilsner to the already available flavors of Pail Rail and Black IPA.
