We here the same questions all the time; “should I get a job as a barback first to learn more about bartending?” Well, no. In fact, getting a job as a barback may hamper your quest for a career in bartending. While a lot of people think that to become a bartender they first have to become a barback to learn the ropes, this could not be further from the truth.
A job as a barback requires a lot of heavy lifting and physically demanding work. You will be asked to restock coolers, change kegs, clear glassware, wash dishes and glasses, and SOMETIMES help the bartender. While this is a nice job, you will learn very little about bartending. You are not learning about making drinks. You are not learning about customer service.
The only way to learn about being a bartender is to actually get behind the bar. But how? How do you gain hands-on experience without actually having a job as a bartender? Attend Bartending School!
