Do You Need to go to School to Become a Bartender?

Ha! The age old question - "Do you need to go to school to become a bartender"

This is a question that comes up pretty frequently in our domain - read this article to get the low-down.

The Short Answer

No, you don't have to.

There are plenty of bartenders that never attended a day of bartending school in their lives.

The way that most of these individuals find themselves behind the bar looks something like this...

1. Get a job at a bar or restaurant (in a non-bartender position - server, host, busser, etc.)

2. Work there for a long time

3. Eventually get a chance at bartending

This may sound like a good way to go, and it may be for you.

The only thing is that within a restaurant, the bartender job is usually the most sought-after. Bartenders usually make more money than anybody else and their job is relatively fun, so naturally, everybody wants a shot behind the bar.

That means that there's a lot of competition to get the job.

The Longer Answer

If you're like me, you don't want to have to wait in line. You'd like to be a step above the competition, to be the first person considered for a job.

So, do you need to go to school to become a bartender - technically, no.

But unless you want to spend years working at a restaurant HOPING to get the chance to be a bartender, you may want to consider some schooling.

Why?

Because as a professionally trained bartender, you can skip the line! You don't have to develop seniority at a particular restaurant, you can go in and start as a bartender - making the most money in the whole place, and having fun doing it.

Bartending school is quick - takes only a few months.

And it's fun - you'll be mixing drinks with other cool people.

And it's cheap - let's put it this way, you can earn back your tuition in just a few shifts.

With those 3 things in mind - why would you ever slave away for a year or more climbing the seniority chart in a restaurant? Take the fast-track and sign-up for bartending school today!

"I enrolled at the Maryland Bartending Academy in May of last year and by July I was working as a bartender in a popular Baltimore club earning upwards of $50/hour. The course was easy and fun. PLUS, they helped me land a bartending job once I had graduated! I highly recommend the Maryland Bartending Academy to anybody interested in becoming a bartender."
